Podcast: Armen and Levack discuss Geno's Comments

In his first interview with the media this off-season, Jets quarterback Geno Smith was very direct when asked if he believes his name will be atop the depth chart for the first game of the season.

"Yes," said Smith, on Monday.

In a highly publicized move, General Manager John Idzik signed free agent Michael Vick over the off-season. Because of age and experience, many believe that Vick is the favorite to get the starting nod in 2014.

"I just believe that with the experience that I have gained," said Smith, "and with the direction that we were heading in as an offense and where I see myself as a second-year player, I just believe that I am more than capable of being the starter."

One of the reasons why this coaching staff likes Smith so much is because of his confidence and attitude.

If Smith were to say, "We'll see what happens in competition" or "I think Vick will start", then there would be reason to worry. The above response is exactly what Jets fans should hope to hear out of their second year quarterback who got all 16 starts last season and proved to be inconsistent.

The signing of Vick is one thing. Smith's retort is another.

The Jets wanted to push Smith and make him better. So far? Mission: Accomplished.
