Teams always hope to escape pre-season without a major injury. The Steelers couldn’t play three quarters without a major contributor going down.

“The biggest [takeaway from the game] is that the Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham wound up tearing his ACL in the opening kickoff of the second half,” said ESPN’s Adam Scheffer, with Armen and Levack.

“You look back and say, ‘What a waste that is.’ The waste comes where Suan Suisam tears his ACL, needs surgery, and now the Steelers need another kicker.”

The injury came while the Steelers were playing the Ravens on Sunday during the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Pittsburgh will now hold tryouts for a new kicker on Tuesday.

Not that it was needed, but this injury reminds teams that it only takes one play during the pre-season to lose a starter for the year. The Vikings announced recently that Adrian Peterson will not be playing during the pre-season.

“Adrian Peterson hasn’t had a carry in a preseason game since 2011,” said Scheffer. “That gives you an idea of how long it’s been. There’s been various factors but you hate to see [an injury like Suisham’s] in the pre-season.”

ESPN’s Adam Scheffer joins Armen and Levack every Monday at 4:45pm ET on 104.5 The Team, sponsored by Death Wish Coffee – Home of the World’s Strongest Coffee.
