At one time Bobby Valentine was one of the brightest up and coming stars in the game of baseball. Injuries hampered those expectations and a new career in coaching and managing began. Valentine had great success as manager with the Texas Rangers for seven years, then with the New York Mets leading an unlikely group to the 2000 World Series against the cross-town rival New York Yankees. Now he is involved in a new kind of race and the final game is played on election day.

Boston Red Sox fans know the value of their once banished manager, Alex Cora, to the success of their franchise. Cora admitted his guilt in the Houston Astros cheating scandal, served his suspension and moved on. Friday, the once villain of Major League Baseball, led his team against his former team that was accused of cheating in the American League Championship Series. You almost couldn't have made it up.

Their rivalry is nearly 140 years old and it all started about 3 hours south of Albany in New York City. One started as the New York Gothams in 1883. The other came to town a year later. They were known as the Brooklyn Atlantics. Their battles have been many, 2,535 to be exact. One, once known as the Gothams holds a slight edge of 1270 victories over the former Atlantics 1248 triumphs. The two have come to 17 draws but those were many years ago.

The very last hope of salvation from a future that involves Sandy Alderson said "no" to the New York Mets today. As reported by Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News and guest on The Drive with Charlie & Dan today, Mets owner Steve Cohen met with the free agent baseball executive star via Zoom this morning and quickly decided that the situation was not a match.

As New York Yankee fans across the state celebrate their last second playoff birth into Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Boston Red Sox that can be heard on the home of Yankee baseball, 104.5 FM WTMM. The unfortunate thing is that Met fans have choked on that last sentence numerous times before. I know. Few things change in the world of Mets fans in October. Yes, the Amazin's have had seven playoff runs with two World Series rings in their 60 year history but the Yankees have won 8 World Championships in that time period and gone to the 29 times.

What can you really say about 10 pitches in a meaningless game at the end of September between two teams that have long been out of the playoff picture? Actually, it was more captivating than I thought it would be. It had been two years since, Noah Syndergaard had thrown a pitch in a Major League, regular season game. The six foot six inch, strapping right hander, with flowing blonde hair and a Marvel Comic Book character nickname, was full of promise and had enormous expectations.

Last night the New York Mets were in Boston to take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park. I was flipping between that and the Yankees vs. Rangers game, while following the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays game. This was all in an effort to keep up with the American League Wild Card race and keep a scant eye on the dim playoff hopes of the disastrous baseball franchise that I root for.

Tuesday and Wednesday, those old "Jeter" jerseys, along with the new "Judge" pinstripes will turn "blue and orange" as the Mets head to Fenway Park in Boston to take on the Red Sox. This is an important week for the Bombers as they try to gain ground on the Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays, who are facing the Tampa Bay Rays this week, in the crazy American League Wild Card race. Aaron Boone and his crew from the Bronx would love nothing more than a nice two game sweep of Boston by their National League brothers from Queens. The Yankees trail Toronto for the second Wild Card by 1/2 game.

OK, I am a typical New Yorker when it comes to people talking or producing a documentary about the New York Mets of the 1980's. So, when ESPN announced that they would be doing a "30 for 30" on the 1986 Mets called "Once Upon A Time In Queens" I rolled my eyes. I admit it.
