The MLS has arguably the best fan base out off all domestic sports. No rivalry gets as intense compared to when the Seattle Sounder and Portland Timber face off with one another. The U.S. Open Cup turned into a Sounder versus referee rivalry in the matter of seconds.

The United States captain Clint Dempsey, ripped up a referee's notebook and was ejected out of the game, as his domestic team Seattle Sounders finished a cup game against Portland Timbers with seven men.

Referee Daniel Radford originally sent off Michael Azira, which led to Dempsey's fury. After the red card Dempsey, had to be restrained by team-mates and sarcastically applauded in the face of an assistant referee as he made his way off the pitch.
