Ask anyone in the East Greenbush-Castleton Youth Baseball League who watched Kevin Smith play as a kid and most, if not all, will tell you they noticed something special in him. Now, on the verge of his 22nd birthday, Smith made fast believers of people around the Blue Jays' Class A affiliate in Lansing, Michigan.

In 44 games, Smith hit .355 with seven home runs and 44 RBI. On top of that, Smith had a .407 on-base percentage and a 1.046 OPS. All of that came as a pleasant surprise to some. What took no one off guard is Smith's defensive ability. He played both shortstop and third base and his glove was as good as advertised.

Jesse Goldberg-Strassler calls the games for the Lansing Lugnuts and saw, first person, Smith's production and what earned him a promotion to the advanced A level team in Dunedin, Florida.
