It was an unorthodox hire for the New York Giants, wrote Dan Graziano of ESPNNewYork.com.

Former Bucs coordinator Mike Sullivan was there for the taking, a guy with Giants roots, but yet the G-Men opted to go with former Green Bay quarterback coach Ben McAdoo.

"Their reasoning is that they feel like they need some fresh blood in there, some fresh ideas, and rejuvenate things," said Graziano, with Armen Williams on 104.5 The Team. "Obviously, it's gotten a little stale the last couple of years.

"For the Giants to go out on the limb and hire someone like that indicates that they do think that something is in need of more drastic change than what we originally would've thought."

The 36-year old McAdoo will be an offensive coordinator for the first time in his career.

"It's a risk. He hasn't really run anything. He hasn't been a coordinator. He hasn't called plays. He's been a coordinator under Mike McCarthy in Green Bay the last nine years. He's going to get a chance to do his thing and probably get a lot of free reign.

"The parting line on this guy is that they feel that he's on an Any Reid track that they're getting on the way up. Getting him now before he's established gives them a chance to get him in their program and maybe catch lightening in a bottle."

After having the worst year of his career last season, Eli Manning will be changing offensive schemes for the first time in his NFL career.

"I think Eli Manning will respond very well to this. I think he's probably hungry for it. There are people that are around Eli that say that maybe things have gotten a little stale and maybe he is looking for a new challenge."
