A big day yesterday for another former Tri-City ValleyCat: Joe Musgrove (2014) made his major league debut for the Houston Astros, tossing 4.1 innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out eight.

Those eight strikeouts are the most by a reliever in his major league debut since 1900 and the most strikeouts for any Astro in his debut.

I had an opportunity to see Musgrove a lot in 2014 when I spent the summer working for the Astros in Tri-City. He has great command and the ability to locate with three pitches. A low-mid 90s fastball with a good curveball and a changeup that he can use allows him to have that "put-away" stuff.

The rest of the league has noticed how good Musgrove can be, as he started the MLB Futures Game during the All-Star Game festivities in San Diego earlier in July.

Musgrove is usually a starter but came in for an injured Lance McCullers.
