The Jets franchise could be losing their patience with soon-to-be third year quarterback Geno Smith but ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that Gang Green likes what they’ve seen this summer.

“I think there are some encouraging signs,” said Schefter, with Armen and Levack on 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio, in Albany, New York. “There are some people I have spoken with who have spent some time with Geno this off-season. They say that he’s a different guy and that a light has gone off, that’s he’s really looked like an effective quarterback.”

Through two seasons, the West Virginia product has thrown 25 touchdowns and 34 interceptions and there’s not a lack of reasons as to why Smith has faltered either. Many put the blame on Rex Ryan’s staff over the last couple of years and their inability to progress a quarterback.

“I happen to think that he’s going to look pretty good under Chan Gaily this year, their new offensive coordinator.”

The Jets added veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and drafted Bryce Petty this off-season to give their QB depth a completely different look. Head coach Todd Bowles has said that it will be an on-going competition, even though Smith’s name is currently at the top.

“[The Jets] have said he’s the starter going to camp, that he’s shown some improvement. They’re excited about how he’s looked.

“It’s in their best interest for him to play well. That’s what they want to happen. They need him to play well. But that’s only going to be proven over time. We’ll see how that works out.”
