Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said shortly after the team made its 4th round selection, that it wasn't an indication of how much longer he believes Eli Manning will play or an indictment on the abilities of backup Davis Webb, but rather a belief in the skills of Kyle Lauletta to translate to the NFL. Lauletta's success is predicated on timing and accuracy; both of which make up for his lack in arm strength.

Lauletta threw for 3,737 yards and 28 touchdowns last season at Richmond. He was 3-0 in his career against UAlbany including double overtime and triple overtime victories.

However the Giants staff wants to spin the selection, Lauletta is direct competition with Webb for the backup role to Manning. Plain and simple, that's the nature of the business. While it has become more common for teams to carry three quarterbacks on the roster, Webb sat behind both Manning and Geno Smith last year and never saw a regular season snap despite the Giants' 3-13 record.
