Odell Beckham Junior was the talk of the Giants mandatory mini-camps but not for great reason. The NFL rookie of the year missed workouts due to a hamstring injury.

Second-year offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo made it clear that no special treatment would be given to Beckham and added that the LSU product would have to "earn" his spot. Tom Coughlin has been vague on Beckham's injury absence as well.

With so much that Beckham did for the G-Men in 2014, why would the coaching staff not defend OBJ while he's missing time due to a legit hamstring injury?

There are many theories, Giants offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz has one of them:

"I think coaches love competition, front offices love competition, we love competition, that’s part of it," said Schwartz, with Armen and Levack, on 104.5 The Team.

"Coaches thrive off that. It makes guys better, and that’s what it is. That’s what he’s saying. If he doesn’t practice and if somebody plays better than him, then in theory, he could lose his spot. I don’t think it’ll happen, but it’s possible, maybe he’s just trying to motivate him.

"If Odell is anywhere near healthy, he’s going to start. We all know that. He’s a dynamic playmaker. He really makes the offense go at times. I know we’re looking forward to him being back. I don’t think there’s any doubt he’ll be back for week one."

Beckham had mentioned mid-week that he was irked that teammates were poking fun of the fact that he wasn't on the field.

"It's hard for me to mock him, especially with coming back from my injury," said Schwartz. "But let me tell you, next year when I’m completely healthy this time of year, I will be back to making fun of people not practicing."

Poking fun of players is just part of it but here's to hoping that Beckham does not have to experience it at all this fall.
