The New York Giants made a surprising choice last night with the 10th pick in the NFL Draft. The Giants selected corner back Eli Apple from Ohio State.

Apple (6'1", 200lbs) described himself as "the black Eli Manning" after being pick by 'Big Blue' on Thursday night. Last season, Apple had 33 tackles, one interception, and eight passes defended, which happen to be down from the season before in which he had 53 tackles, three interceptions, and ten passes defended.

Strength: Apple is a great press corner. He has the ability to play the ball in the air and force receivers off their route with his physical hand play. Very consistent in helping stop the run game on the outside. His strong, short, and quick footwork allows him to stay tight on his man.

Weakness:  Apple can be a guy who grabs a receiver from time to time. He is also not the greatest open-field tackler and doesn't play to his size at times.

Potential: Apple will start the season as the 3rd CB behind Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He can develop into a lock-down corner that can face up against physical receivers.

Was the selection a bit of a reach? Yes, but not by much. Apple will contribute immediately and will benefit from having Rodgers-Cromartie and Jenkins to learn from as well.
