Granderson lifts Yankees over Twins, 7-6
Curtis Granderson hit not one, not two but three home runs in the Yankees (7-6) win over the Minnesota Twins (4-9) Thursday night. Granderson homered in the first, second and fourth innings he also singled twice. He finished the night 5-5 with four RBI. He now has six home runs this season. The Yankees bats continued to look good, A-Rod, Raul Ibanez and Mark Teixeira all had multi-hit games. Mark Teixeira blasted a two run home run in the first inning, his first of the season. Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a RBI single in the second, it was the 3,110th hit of his career, tying him with Dave Winfield for 18th all time.
It looked like it was going to be a rough start for Phil Hughes after a long first inning where he gave up four runs however; none of them were earned following an Eduardo Nunez throwing error. He managed to settle down and throw four shutout innings, before Ryan Doumit knocked him out with a two run home run in the sixth inning. Hughes went 5 1/3 gave up six runs, 2 earned and had four strikeouts. Twins starter Anthony Swarzak got roughed up. He gave up six runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The Yankee bullpen was sharp in holding the one run lead. Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano and David Roberston combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Mariano pitched a perfect ninth and picked up his third save of the season.
The Yankees will travel to Boston and play Friday afternoon. Yankees will start Ivan Nova (2-0 4.15) while the Red Sox will start Clay Buchholz (1-0 9.82). Pregame starts at 2:30, first pitch at 3:05 right here on 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio.
