The Greenwich and Chatham softball teams came away with state titles this weekend.

Kayla Doty pitched a five-hitter as Chatham knocked off Mynderse Academy (Section V), 4-3, and capture the state's Class B championship at Queensbury.

Karsyn Sawyer had a game-winning single in the sixth inning for Chatham.

Dani DeGregory continued her hot hitting as Greenwich downed Greene (Section IV), 5-2, and the Class C championship.

DeGregory, who delivered six hits and nine RBI on the day, stroked an RBI double to push the Witches ahead, 3-2.

Abby Dusha contributed a clutch double and two RBI to help the cause.

In their semifinal contest, the Witches had an easy 12-1 win over Pierson/Bridgeport (Section XI). DeGregory highlighted the offense with a grand slam homer.

Rachel Albrecht pitched another outstanding game allowing just two hits and striking out 15.

In the semifinal, Chatham got the best of Windsor (Section IV), 2-0.

The Class D semifinal saw Fort Ann drop a 10-3 decision to Deposit (Section IV).

Jordan Aubin collected a double and two RBI for Fort Ann which ended the season at 16-6.

The Shaker girls lacrosse team saw its season come to an end with a 5-4 double overtime loss to Penfield (Section V) in the New York State Class A semifinal at SUNY Cortland on Friday.

Maddie Devine and Anne Rehfuss each delivered two goals for the Blue Bison which finished the season at 17-2. Shaker had won 12 straight before the semifinal test.

 

 

Baseball

Briarcliff (Section I) scored three runs in the fourth and handed Albany Academy a 4-3 loss in the state Class B semifinals.

Ian Bennett slammed a two-run homer to lead the Cadets' offense.

A big seventh inning propelled Coleman Catholic defeated Fort Ann, 2-1, in a Class D semifinal matchup.

Doug Terrone hit an RBI single to give Coleman Catholic the exciting win.

Fort Ann finished with a 21-4 record. Robert Sprague retired 18 batters in a row at one stretch.

Coleman Catholic beat Oriskany, 2-0, to gain the state crown.

In a Class C semifinal, Voorheesville fell to Haldane, 6-0.

Scoring three runs in the seventh inning, New Hartford (Section III) edged past Glens Falls, 7-6, in a Class A regional championship game.

Ben Phelps rapped a two-out RBI single to provide the winning margin for New Hartford.

Alex Wright paced the Indians with two RBI.

Glens Falls ends the season with a 21-3 record.

 

Track and field

The New York State Championships came to a conclusion on Saturday with several impressive performances by Section II athletes.

Colonie sensation Kyle Plante won the Federation 400-meters with 53.60.

On Friday, she won the Division I 400 at 54.21 and helped the 1,600 relay take second with a 53.2 time.

Joe Carr of Burnt Hills took first in the Division I 200 (21.98) for federation and state titles.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo's Courtney Tedeschi was first in Division II's 2,000 steeplechase, Jelani Currie of Albany Academy starred in the triple jump (48-6) and Isaiah Turek of Ichabod Crane excelled in Division II high jump.

Amsterdam's Matt White (Division I) finished second in the pentathlon (3,577 points) while Isabella Borini of Schalmont took second in Division II, (3,049 points).

Keelin Hollowood of Saratoga posted second in the steeplechase (6:48.74) and Caysie Capano of Troy had the same position in discus (123-0).

The Shenendehowa girls 3,200 relay finished second in Division I with 9:09.46.

Holy Names' 3,200 relay took runnerup in Division II (9:17.67).
