Halfmoon Man Who Raises Money for Kids to Attend College a ‘Hometown Hero’

This week’s “Hometown Hero,” Gerald Christie, of Halfmoon, started a nonprofit organization to raise money for students who cannot afford to attend college. But what inspired him to start his generous organization may qualify him to be a “hero” in and of itself.

Gerald Christie is this week’s “Hometown Hero.”

Five years ago, Gerald had a 14-hour brain surgery and at the time, the neurosurgeon said he would not live another year. However, Gerald is now a 4-year survivor of cancer.

Gerald gained a newfound appreciation for life, and decided to put his to good use. He and his family take in children from China to live with them who are then able to attend school in the United States. Following his desire to help youth with their education, Gerald has also started a nonprofit organization called Getting to College. Getting to College helps raise money for kids who could otherwise not afford college without the help of the program and the scholarships that the organization works to raise. More information on Getting to College can be found here.

Gerald’s nominator, Jessica Lacey, is impressed with Gerald’s selflessness and the fact that he is “always thinking about others.”

As part of the “Hometown Heroes” series, we’ve partnered with County Waste, Latham Ford, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Awards by Walsh to celebrate local unsung heroes for their good deeds and honorable work. Thanks, Gerald, for all that you do!
