Andrew Jackson Leonard began his professional baseball career over 150 years ago. He played for the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.
Jackson Leonard signed what is known to be one of the oldest contracts in the sport in 1871, just a few years after he started getting paid to play back in 1869. He signed what is considered one of the oldest baseball artifacts known to historians to play for the Washington Olympics; a one-year deal for a whopping $720. Jackson Leonard died at age 57 in 1903 and was buried in a cemetery in Boston.
Now his 82-year old grandson is trying to sell the coveted document in order to get his grandfather a proper burial marker. The sale is being handled by Heritage Auctions, a Dallas-based company known to intrigue many sports collectable enthusiasts.
The 40-word document along with a journal kept by Jackson Leonard could easily total over $100,000 at auction.
How much would you pay for this coveted piece of baseball history?
