Big news out of Shenendehowa: Senior standout guard Kevin Huerter has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York.

He follows in the footsteps of Niskayuna standout Garrett Whitley, who earned the same award on the baseball diamond after the 2015 campaign.

Huerter helped lead the Plainsmen to a second straight Class AA Sectional title and a spot in the NYS Final Four. The Plainsmen fell to Aquinas in that round, one year after winning the state championship.

Huerter averaged more than 21 points a game this season for Shen, which went unbeaten in Section II play. Huerter will play his collegiate basketball at Maryland after turning down more than 20 other offers including Syracuse, Xavier, Texas Tech, Baylor, Iowa, Notre Dame and others.

Don't worry, Shen fans, while Huerter won't be back next year, the Plainsmen still have plenty of talent including guard Luke Hicks, big man Mike Pizziketti and sharpshooter Jake Dzikas.
