Phil Hughes dominated the Seattle Mariners (15-20) lineup in the Yankees (19-14) 6-2 victory on Saturday. Hughes who has struggled so far this season put together an impressive 7 2/3 inning start giving up only one run on five hits He struck out four and walked only one. Hughes now stands at 3-4 with a 5.50 ERA.

 Former Yankee Hector Noesi also pitched fairly well aside from one inning in his start for the Mariners. Noesi went seven innings, gave up five runs on six hits. The one bad inning was the second where the Yankees scored four runs.

In that second inning Mark Teixeira reached with a double and was later driven in thanks to a Raul Ibanez RBI double. Russell Martin followed with an RBI double of his own and Jayson Nix capped it off with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot  putting the Yankees on top 4-0.  The Yankees added another run in the fourth inning thanks to a Raul Ibanez solo homerun that landed in Monument Park. Ibanez now has seven home runs and 21 RBI for the season. A Robinson Cano RBI single off of Mariners reliever Tom Wilhelmsen in the eighth was the Yankees sixth run. Cano now has 13 RBI.

Derek Jeter was 2-4 with a run scored. Jeter now has 3,141 base hits good for 17th all time tied with Tony Gwynn.

The Seattle runs both came from Seattle left fielder Mike Carp. In the seventh he hit a solo home run off of Hughes, his second home run of the season. In the ninth inning with a runner on Carp doubled off the right field wall scoring a run off of Boone Logan.

The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow. Andy Pettitte is scheduled to make his first start for the Yankees while Kevin Millwood (0-4 5.88) goes for the Mariners. Pregame starts at 12:30, first pitch at 1:05 right here on 104.5 The Tea m ESPN Radio.
