Hudson Valley Community College has boasted a nationally-known hockey program for many years and has won a national championship (2001), but after the 2017 season, the program will exist no more.

The school recently announced the decision to shut down the hockey program. The NJCAA requires you to have eight teams to have a championship and right now hockey is only at six. HVCC's departure would make five teams if nothing else changed.

Today, we brought in head coach Matt Alvey, in his 13th season at the helm of the program, to talk about the decision to disband the program and his reaction to hearing the news.

He also said it's been tough to keep the NJCAA hockey scene going as multiple teams (Morrisville, Canton) have moved from junior college to the Division III ranks.

We also talked about the struggle in recruiting this season - as the players brought in will only be eligible to play for one season before the program is shut down.
