Sad news in the auto racing world as this year's Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died in huge crash today in a race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was 33.

The race had barely gotten underway when the accident happened that involved 14 other cars when two cars touched tires. Quite a few cars burst into flames and left such an impact that it left holes in the asphalt. Wheldon  was airlifted from the Las Vegas track and taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

When the announcement was made that Wheldon had died the remainder of the race was cancelled. Following the announcement the drivers returned to their cars for a a five lap tribute to Wheldon while the speakers blared the songs "Danny Boy" and "Amazing Grace".

The Racing world has lost an incredible talent. Wheldon was a 2-time Indianapolis 500 winner which includes the win this year. He won 16 times in his IndyCar career and was the IndyCar Champion in 2005. Godspeed and Rest in Peace Dan Wheldon.
