Geno Smith is back with his team after jaw surgery, following a lack of public support from the guys in the locker room after being punched in the face. Does this team now have less belief in Smith because of the recent incident?

"I don’t want to say that the teammates don’t support him," said ESPN's Adam Schefter, to Armen and Levack, on 104.5 The Team. "I don’t think it’s that at all, but so far he is an unproven quarterback. They want a quarterback that is going to help them win, whoever that is."

The Jets are hoping that person is Ryan Fitzpatrick as he's the veteran that has been chosen to lead this team starting this weekend in the regular season opener against the Browns.

"[The Jets are] only going to make a change if they are losing and if they make the change to Geno at that point and Geno plays well and the team’s winning, I guarantee the team’s going to be very happy about having Geno as its quarterback.

"I guarantee if Geno doesn’t get the chance, it doesn’t matter to them and if he is losing and not playing well, they are not going to back him and they are not going to be particularly pleased that he’s playing quarterback.  This is a league that’s all about production on a week to week basis and Geno Smith hasn’t proven anything with the Jets so far.

"So why should his team come out with the type of vociferous support for him that the Patriots would with Tom Brady? Tom Brady has won four Super Bowls. Geno Smith hasn’t taken the Jets to the playoffs.  If Geno Smith were to do that, and sort of build a reservoir of good will, I’m sure he’d have a lot more support than he does."

On Tuesday, Smith spoke to the media for the first time since breaking his jaw.

“There’s always a lesson learned in every situation, good or bad,” Smith said. “So, obviously, I have learned something. But like I said, I don’t want to keep talking about it. I hate the fact that we have to.”

It will be much easier to forget the incident if Smith gets back on the field this year ... and wins.

ESPN's Adam Schefter joins Armen and Levack every Monday at 4:45p ET on 104.5 The Team, sponsored by Death Wish Coffee.
