LeBron Signs Lifetime Nike Contract
I didn't think anyone could have longer contracts than hockey ones, but on Monday it was announced that LeBron James is set to sign a lifetime deal with Nike. No, not a TV-movie based on a basketball player from Akron that grows up with no father, and becomes one of the greatest athletes ever, we'll save that for LeBron's movie company.
"We can confirm that we have agreed to a lifetime relationship with LeBron that provides significant value to our business, brand and shareholders," Nike said in a statement. "We have already built a strong LeBron business over the past 12 years, and we see the potential for this to continue to grow throughout his playing career and beyond."
This will be Nike's first ever lifetime contract, but not the first show companies. Adidas has structured them with Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose and soccer legend David Beckham.
There's been no figures announce on the deal yet. ESPN senior writer Darren Rovell reported that. A source close to the deal told ESPN that it easily surpasses the 10-year, $300 million deal Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant signed with the world's largest shoe and apparel brand last summer.
Nike has made more versions of LeBron's shoe (13) than for any other athlete outside of Jordan.
Lebron's shoes are the new Jordan's. I never thought I would see another person sell shoe's like MJ, but LeBron's annual sales in 2015 for his line is estimated to top $400 million, and Christmas shopping has just begun.
