On Friday night, Don Bassett arrived at Catholic Central High School under false pretenses. The basketball coaching legend was invited to take part in the Crusaders' Senior Night festivities not knowing the spotlight would soon be shining on him.

Bassett graduated from Catholic Central and then returned as the head coach, finishing his incredible career with a 250-70 record. So, it is only fitting that Bassett's name would forever grace the hardwood of the Crusaders' court

Friday night's court dedication was a year in the making and until a sign was revealed on the floor itself, it was a well-kept secret from Bassett who became emotional when surrounded by family and honored by his alma mater.

Bassett also served on George Karl's staff with the Albany Patroons in their heyday and he is currently a volunteer assistant with Will Brown at UAlbany.

On a personal note, Donnie is one of the kindest, thoughtful and, of course, most knowledgeable basketball minds I have ever met. We laugh about his obsession over free throws and playing fast, but it speaks to his approach at life. Don't take the simple for granted and, no matter what gets in your way, don't stop moving forward.
