If the Mets didn't make the lucrative offer then another team like the Washington Nationals would have. The Mets wanted his big bat back, but they also didn't want to see him playing for anyone else either. The Mets should be contenders next season to get to the World Series and they need that production from Cespedes in the middle of their lineup. The Mets are built to win right now, and that's why it was essential for the Mets to re-sign Cespedes, who has been their best offensive player in each of the last two seasons.
