The New York Mets are nearing an extension with speedy outfielder Juan Lagares.

Passan reports that the agreement will be official today after a physical.

The first year calls for a $2.5 million salary, followed by years at $4.5 million, $6.5 million and $9 million, sources said, and the option is for $9.5 million, with a $500,000 buyout, he says.

This is a great move for the Mets, who have locked up last year's Gold Glove winner for the long-term. With OFs Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo waiting to come up from the minor leagues, the Mets are looking at a very good OF in 2017.

Lagares still has some work to do at the plate. He has hit .262 in two major league seasons with just a .302 on-base percentage.
