Sports were an outlet for many Americans post 9/11.  People looked at them to escape and it wasn’t a Yankee that elevated the city that felt so much pain. That lift came from Queens and the Mets.

Mike Piazza’s post 9/11 home run was something to grasp on to after all the reality that was dumped in New Yorkers laps the previous week. We were cut off from sports  from talk show, everything but coverage of the massacre in New York. This was something that helped us for just a second, a brief brief second escape the true terror of our day to day reality in the new post 9/11 America.
