Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduate Matt Patricia just coached in his third Super Bowl, this past February.

On Thursday, Patricia, a RPI graduate of 1996, was promoted to the position of Defensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots.

Patricia has spent eight seasons with the Patriots, the first as a coaching assistant in 2004. He was elevated to an offensive line coach in 2005 and then transitioned to the defense. Patricia spent five seasons as the linebackers coach (2006-10) and coached the safeties last season, as New England went all the way to Super Bowl XLVI.

Patrica played football for RPI, under legendary coach Joe King, from 1992-95. He was an offensive lineman on three ECAC championship winning squads.

While at Rensselaer, Patricia helped the Engineers go 32-7.

Patricia spent one season at his alma mater, as a graduate assistant before heading off to Amherst College. He quickly moved up the ranks, spending three years (2001-03) at Syracuse, and then joined the Patriots.

It's terrific that Patricia has been able to move  up the ranks so quickly, and now as the defensive coordinator, he should be much more prominent on the sidelines as one of Bill Belichick's top assistants.
