Citing an injury, defending men's Olympic singles tennis champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the 2012 London games.

Nadal, the third ranked men's tennis player in the world, was designated as Spain's flag bearer during the upcoming opening ceremonies before he elected to withdraw.

He had the opportunity to become the first player to ever win back to back Olympic gold medals in men's or women's singles tennis prior to making the decision. His last on court appearance was a five set upset loss to 100th ranked Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon. Nadal is an impressive 42-6 in singles matches in 2012.
