After the New York Rangers opened the season with three straight wins. Many people commented on how fresh the team came out of the gate. They looked like they were already gearing up for a playoff run. That faded quickly after they matched it with a three game losing streak.

The Rangers went into San Jose to take on the Sharks, with the attitude of a must win game “Everyone in the room knows that the level we were playing at isn’t acceptable,” said Marc Staal. “It’s something we wanted to take care of.”

The Rangers did just that, coming out and beating the Sharks 4-0 with goals by  Staal, Mats Zuccarello, Jesper Fast and Viktor Stalberg.

The unsung hero for the team was back up goalie Antti Raanta. Raanta stopped all 22 shots he faced to become the fourth goalie in franchise history to get a shutout in his first start with the team. The Rangers acquired Raanta on a draft day deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.
