The Rangers pulled off a surprise move on Saturday morning by dealing Carl Hagelin to the Anaheim Ducks. New York included a pair of draft picks (59th and 179th) in a package in which the Ducks sent back forward Emerson Etem and the 41st overall pick.

When it comes down to it, the Rangers sent away one of their most electric offensive players because of the sheer money involved. Headed into the final year of his contract, Hagelin would have required a large bump in the near future if he were to stay with the Rangers.

While the talent seems a bit lop-sided in the deal, the driving factor here was to give the Rangers some flexibility under the salary cap so that they can have multiple options this off-season and into the future, which they have now made happen.

The Rangers have lost a burst of speed with Hagelin, one of the fastest in the NHL, no longer on the roster. But Etern is physically larger and a has a strong puck presence which could go well in the fast offense that the Rangers put on the ice.

Other Rangers moves included trading backup goalie Cam Talbot to the Oilers for three additional picks. Talbot shined when Lundqvist missed significant time this past season.
