Rivera Lends Helping Hand

Retired Yankees star Mariano Rivera is picking up another save in New York.

The famed relief pitcher has rescued an abandoned and deteriorating church in New Rochelle. His foundation has put about $3 million into the project.

An opening ceremony is being held Thursday.

The former Presbyterian church was renovated for a Christian Pentecostal congregation headed by Rivera’s wife, Clara. It will also provide educational and sports-oriented after-school activities for children.

The 107-year-old grey stone building has been vacant since the 1970s. It’s next to the city’s police and courts complex and the architect who worked on the renovation says it had been used for storing evidence.

The city agreed to sell the property for $1 on the promise of rehabilitating it.
