Following the retirement of Steve Spurrier, South Carolina football is looking for a new football coach. Reports are suggesting that a coach within the Gamecocks' conference (the SEC) may be their lead candidate. Kirby Smart, the defensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide is emerging as the front runner for the job. Smart was the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2009 Broyles Award winner as college football's top assistant coach. Smart is a part of an Alabama football program that currently ranks second in the country despite a loss to Ole Miss earlier in the season. The 39 year old Smart's defense so far this season ranks first in the country in yards per play, second in run defense and third in total defense. Smart has been a long time assistant on Nick Saban's staff. Smart was with Saban in 2004 with LSU then as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins during his tenure in the NFL and rejoined the collegiate ranks after Saban was hired by the Crimson Tide in 2007. South Carolina is 3-8 this season and closes out their season at home against the number one team in the country, the Clemson Tigers.
