We get besieged with disturbing stories coming from college athletics but today I bring good news for a local University.

Siena College finished sixth in the nation in graduation rates. In data just released by the GSR (Graduation Success Rate), student athletes who entered as freshman in 2005 graduated at a very solid 95%. That figure was sixth highest in the nation.

Adding to Siena's growing emphasis on graduating athletes, they have now finished in the top ten in GSR for eight straight reports. Siena has finished with a GSR of at least 93% in all reports, one of just 21 institutions to finish that high in all reports. This is the sixth time Siena has finished with at least a 95% graduation rate or higher. The school high is 98% in 2011.

Siena President Fr. Kevin Mullen said of the latest report and emphasis on education "it's a commitment that is shared by our faculty and administrators. It's something that our student body and staff take great pride in. I think there is a collective effort here."

Major kudos and congratulations to all the folks at Siena, for understanding sports may be for today, but educated youngsters are forever!
