Siena Women’s Tennis opened up their 2016-17 campaign at the SHU Doubles Invitational on Sunday. Six teams competed at the Doubles Invitational hosted by Sacred Heart.Sacred Heart hosted Siena, Holy Cross, Providence, Fairfield and invitational winners, Quinnipiac to start the season.“It was nice to get some match play and try to figure out some doubles combos,” stated head coach Jeff Osbourn. “I was pretty happy with what I saw today and will continue to build on this throughout the season.” Seniors Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi went 4-1 on the day with their only loss coming against the ultimate winners Quinnipiac. Against Providence, the pair went 6-1 while then defeating Fairfield 6-2. When paired up against Holy Cross, Garrity and Fukamachi went 6-3. In a close match against Sacred Heart, Siena picked up a 7-5 win. Juniors Rina Sakai and sophomore Ann Phillips also went 4-1 on the day. Their only loss was in a tight match where the Saints fell 7-5 to Quinnipiac. Siena blanked both Fairfield and Holy Cross 6-0. They came out victorious over Providence in a 7-6 (4) tie breaking win. Against tournament host, the two took a 6-2 victory. Natalie Weaver and Ivana Boberic along with junior Julia Dunbar and freshman Juliana Goehner went 2-3 during their time at the tournament. Weaver and Boberic defeated both Holy Cross and Fairfield 6-2. Dunbar and Goehner’s victories also came over Fairfield and Holy Cross with 6-3 and 6-1 respective wins. The Saints will travel to face Rider on this Saturday.. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
