The Wild Card game wasn't exactly the goal that Hal Steinbrenner had for his franchise this year. But baseball can be a cruel game. If Giancarlo Stanton hits that baseball a fraction of a millimeter differently in the 6th inning on Tuesday, that game is tied and there may have been a different result. But he didn't and there wasn't. That is what baseball does. It is extremely humbling.

The New York Yankees had been struggling to find that identity that carried them through a blistering late August, 13 game winning streak. The Bombers were coming off of a disappointing weekend last week after Cleveland pasted them twice. Three wins against the Texas Rangers prior to heading into Boston on Friday was a good tune-up for the wild playoff atmosphere in Fenway Park this weekend. Six head to head games with the two teams you are fighting for playoff spots is just the way the New York Yankees franchise likes it.

Baseball schedulers couldn't have scripted the 2021 baseball season any better. A storybook ending for the American League Wild Card race will maybe somehow would put the icing on the COVID 19 plagued season. Maybe it will make the players forget the impending termination of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the untrustworthy owners. Nah but the final week will be WILD!

Last night the New York Mets were in Boston to take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park. I was flipping between that and the Yankees vs. Rangers game, while following the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays game. This was all in an effort to keep up with the American League Wild Card race and keep a scant eye on the dim playoff hopes of the disastrous baseball franchise that I root for.

Tuesday and Wednesday, those old "Jeter" jerseys, along with the new "Judge" pinstripes will turn "blue and orange" as the Mets head to Fenway Park in Boston to take on the Red Sox. This is an important week for the Bombers as they try to gain ground on the Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays, who are facing the Tampa Bay Rays this week, in the crazy American League Wild Card race. Aaron Boone and his crew from the Bronx would love nothing more than a nice two game sweep of Boston by their National League brothers from Queens. The Yankees trail Toronto for the second Wild Card by 1/2 game.

The big question now facing both teams, is will they get there? Red Sox are 24-25 since the All Star break. Conversely, the Yankees are 32-16. Both teams are being chased by Seattle, Oakland and the an old division friend stacked with talented youth, the Blue Jays. The Mariners and Toronto are playing great baseball right now while the Yankees struggled to take 1 of 3 games against the Orioles this weekend and were blown out by the Blue Jays on Monday 8-0. The Red Sox have lost 2 straight and continue to flounder.

When New York Yankees General Manger Brian Cashman traded for Anthony Rizzo, he knew exactly what he was getting. Cashman had signed a large framed, slick fielding first baseman name Mark Teixeira back in 2009. That worked out pretty well for the Bronx Bombers. Don't be surprised if Mr. Rizzo sticks around New York for a long time, as he led the Yankees back in the eighth inning, as they defeated the Marlins, 3-1 Sunday afternoon. Thanks much in part to their new acquisitions, New York swept the three-game series from Miami and finished the road trip at 6-4.

BOSTON (AP) — Held hitless into the eighth inning by Domingo Germán and looking feeble, Alex Verdugo and the Boston Red Sox suddenly erupted for five runs to shake Fenway Park and storm past the New York Yankees 5-4. The old ballpark was almost silent all afternoon until Verdugo opened the eighth with a long double for Boston’s first hit. By the time Kiké ...
