It was some weekend in sports. The Knicks are dead and so is the Triple Crown in horse racing. Hockey's Rangers are in trouble and there is a new winner on the PGA Tour. Let's take a look at the Top 5 weekend performers in sports.
Tim Lincecum. Remember him? He won two CY Young awards back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 at age 24 and 25. Now he can barely stay in the Giants' rotation. Phil Hughes? Bust at age 28. Ivan Nova won 16 games in 2011 and hasn't been heard from since. Ricky Romero was supposed to be the ace of the Blue Jays in 2009 and beyond. Injuries and confidence have caused him to be a below average pitcher.
The Yanks come off a series loss in Tampa where they could have easily been swept if not for 8th and 9th inning rallies in game two. Toronto comes off a tough series loss at Camden Yards to the Orioles but were able to salvage a game three win 6-5 after losing two one -run games. Now the Bronx hosts these clubs for four. Here is a series preview.
The Yankees topped Tampa Bay in game two of a three-game series 4-2. What seemed like a potential Rays sweep after game one and Matt Moore's dominating performance while CC Sabathia struggled could now be a Yankees series win, their fifth straight.
The New York Yankees, with the depleted roster we all know by now, opened up 2013 losing two of three to Boston and two of three to Detroit. BUT, the last game against Detroit was a 7-0 win and the Yanks downed ace Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia rebounded for a win, so the momentum is there to ride. And now the pinstripes head to Cleveland for a four-game set. Here is a series preview:

From his hipster glasses to his Belichick hoodie to his themed t-shirts, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon is a bit of a sports fashion plate. (That's him in gnome form, at left.) Back in mid-July, the New York Yankees had a 10-game lead on the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Now, with just twenty-five games remaining in the 2012 regular season, the Yankees and Orioles are tied for the lead, with the Rays only two games behind...
The knee jerk answer is no, nothing is worse than being the only team in MLB history to blow a 3-0 lead in a playoff series, but as far as the regular season goes: yes we are!
The latest loss being a 5-2 defeat in Tampa on Wednesday night...
Back on July 18, the Yankees had a 10-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles. And now, entering tonight's game in Tampa Bay, the Yankees are only one game ahead of the Orioles. They've lost nine of their last 13 games, while batting around ...
It only seems like last week the Yankees enjoyed the biggest division lead in all of Baseball. That's gone now. It was only a short time it appeared the Yanks would run away with the AL East. That's gone now. It seemed manager Joe Girardi would be able to rest his strters and get his playoff rotation in order...
On Tuesday night, Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was ejected from the game against the Washington Nationals for having pine tar on his glove. However, this kind of cheating hasn't had nearly as much publicity as if someone had been caught using PED's...
