The Yankees (39-25) and the Nationals (38-25) played a long game that went 14 innings and lasted just under five hours on Saturday afternoon, the Yankees ended up rallying and winning 5-3 in the 14th. Both starters pitched well but to no decisions as a late game tying home run from the Nationals side sent this one to extras. Pettitte went seven innings gave up two runs on five hits and struck out six. Zimmerman went six innings gave up three runs, two earned on five hits and struck out six.

In the second inning the Nationals got on the board first off of Pettitte. Michael Morse singled to lead off the inning and Tyler Moore walked putting runners on first and second for the catcher Jesus Flores who drove both runners in with a long double in the left center field gap.

In the top of the fourth inning the Yankees would finally get to Jordan Zimmerman. Robinson Cano walked, Nick Swisher followed with and single and Raul Ibanez moved them over. With runners on second and third Eric Chavez hit a ground ball to short stop Ian Desmond who threw in the dirt past Adam LaRoche scoring Swisher and making the score 2-1 Nationals.

In the sixth inning Robinson Cano led off with a single and Nick Swisher doubled putting runners at second and third for Raul Ibanez who grounded out but tied the game at 2 in the process. The Yankees weren’t done in the inning. After Russell Martin reached on a fielder’s choice where Nick Swisher was thrown out at the plate and injured on the play Eric Chavez doubled off the left field wall scoring Martin and putting the Yanks up 3-2.

The Nationals tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to an Ian Desmond solo home run off of Cory Wade. It was Desmond’s 10th of the season.

The Yankees finally rallied in the 14th inning off of Brad Lidge after being held hitless since the sixth inning against the Nationals bullpen. Jayson Nix led off with a single and stole second. Derek Jeter followed with a single of his own putting runners on the corners. Curtis Granderson then struck out which led to Mark Teixeira’s two run double in the right field corner putting the Yankees up 5-3.

Rafael Soriano came on in the bottom of the 14th to pick up his 12th save of the season.

Freddy Garcia was the winning pitcher with his two shutout innings. The win put him at 1-2 for the season.

Nick Swisher left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with what’s being called a left quad contusion.

Nationals star Bryce Harper finished the game 0-7 with five strikeouts.

Odd stat: It was the first game the Yankees won all season where they did not hit a home run.
