The Albany Devils Debut A New Goalie And Get Back To Winning

Albany fans say hello to Scott Wedgewood. How long he will be with the club is unknown. What is known is this-In his 1st AHL contest he shut down the Northeast leading Springfield Falcons and led the Devils to a big 4-1 win Saturday in front of over 5,000 fans at the Times Union Center.

Wedgewood came to Albany from the New jersey Devils team in the ECHL, Trenton. His numbers their were not overwhelming. He was 17-21-3 with a goals against over 3.20. However with Jeff Frazee up with the big club and Keith Kinkaid needing a blow it was Wedgewood who got the call and he responded in a big way, stopping 23 shots and keeping the score tied after 2 at a goal apiece.

The Devils got the 1st tally of the night scoring in the 1st period. The red hot Joe Whitney who scored a pair of goals started the scoring. Whitney later scored in the 3rd period, part of a 3 goal spurt by Albany that took a 1-1 deadlock and made it 4-1 which was the final. Whitney now has 20 goals on the season, including 8 goals and 3 assists in the past 10 games.

Also scoring for Albany in this huge win was Mike Sislo who scored the game winner. Eric Gelinas gave the nice crowd a surprise on Eric Gelinas bobble head night as he scored the last of Albany’s 4 goals.

Back to Wedgewood. The only goal he surrendered  was on a Falcons 5-3 man advantage in the 2nd period. Other then that nothing for the division leading Falcs. The Devils are making a strong push for the playoffs led by their division record which is an outstanding 14-7-0-3. They conclude their 3 games in 3 days, all at home, Sunday in the latest installment of the Time Warner Challenge against Adirondack. The Devils have already won the season series and the Time Warner cable Cup which comes with winning the season series.
