1927 — Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees became the first major league player to hit 60 home runs in a season, when he connected against the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1945 — Hank Greenberg of the Tigers hit a ninth inning grand slam to beat the St. Louis Browns, 6-3, at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis and clinch the American League pennant for Detroit. (More info.)

1962 — The New York Mets lost their major league-record 120th game of the regular season, 5-1, to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. (More info.)

1984 — Mike Witt of the California Angels pitched a perfect game, beating the Texas Rangers, 1-0, at Arlington Stadium. (More info.)
