Tim Duncan has announced his retirement from the NBA after 19 illustrious seasons.

Duncan, or "The Big Fundamental" will go down as one of the greatest players in NBA history. In those 19 seasons, he won five championships, three NBA Finals MVPs, two league MVPs and is sure to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

His praises came in from all over the sporting world today:

A great career comes to an end. Hard to believe that the league has lost Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan in the same season. It's fitting that Duncan didn't get the farewell tour. He's not that kind of player. He just let his play do the talking.

Perhaps Duncan realized also that with Kevin Durant going to Golden State, that the Spurs just didn't have much of a chance to compete in the Western Conference on a championship level.

Best of luck in the next phase of your career, Tim Duncan.
