The Yankees (26-22) put up a good fight in a great back and forth ball game, but an Angels (25-25) walk off home run would be the difference in the first game of the three game series on Monday night. Phil Hughes got roughed up for seven runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

In a bizarre top of the first inning Angels ace starter Jared Weaver went down with what is being called a lower back injury after only pitching to two Yankee hitters, the Yankees scored three runs in the inning off of reliever Bobby Cassevah. Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson each singled and Alex Rodriguez reached on an error when shortstop Erick Aybar booted a ground ball scoring Jeter. A Raul Ibanez sac-fly scored Granderson making the score 2-0, then Nick Swisher stole second base and thanks to a throwing error on the play by pitcher Bobby Cassevah Alex Rodriguez scored.

The Angels answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs off of Hughes. Kendry Morales, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick all had RBI base hits.

In the top of the second inning Curtis Granderson would answer right back and tie the game with a solo home run. Granderson now has 15 on the season.

In the bottom of the third the Angels would pull ahead 5-4 after Mark Trumbo led off with a triple when Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson collided in right-center field leading to a Howie Kendrick RBI sac-fly.  Mike Trout made the score 6-4 in the fourth inning when he hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season.

Mark Teixeira would cut back into that lead in the top of the fifth with a solo shot, his ninth.

In the bottom of the sixth the Angels would make it a three run game when Kendry Morales doubled in the left center gap scoring two making the score 8-5.

The Yankees would answer right back in the top of the seventh scoring three runs to tie the game at eight.  Cano, Teixeira and Ibanez all reached safely loading the bases which led to a Nick Swisher sac-fly making the score 8-6. Russell Martin then stepped in with his .176 batting average and delivered a big two-run double tying the game.

In the bottom of the ninth Mark Trumbo blasted a walk off home run on the third pitch he saw from Cory Wade. Trumbo has eight on the season and finished the game a single away from the cycle.

The Yankees play the Angels again Tuesday night. Andy Pettitte (2-1 2.53) starts for the Yankees while Dan Haren (2-5 3.76) starts for the Angels. Pregame starts at 9:30, first pitch at 10:05 right here on 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio.
