Rising sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was selected in the 3rd round (78th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Gostisbehere (Margate, FL/South Kent School) is the sixth player in the history of the Union College men’s ice hockey program to be selected in the NHL Draft and the first since 2004.

An ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team selection, Gostisbehere finished the 2011-12 season with 5 goals and 17 assists in 41 games. He matched a school record in ECAC Hockey play with four assists in a 4-4 tie against Cornell on Feb. 4, earning ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honors for his efforts.

He came into his own in the second half of the season, recording 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) in his final 16 contests, while playing a key role on a Union defense that led the nation in goals-against (1.83 goals allowed/game).

Gostisbehere was recently announced as one of 46 players invited to take part in the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp this August in Lake Placid, N.Y. The players will be auditioning for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013, in Ufa, Russia.
