Weekend Sports Recap
Wow. What another great weekend for Capital Region sports.
College
First off, Shenendehowa graduate and University of Virginia second baseman Branden Cogswell helped lead the Cavs to an opening-game win at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The 'Hoos walked-off Ole Miss in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 2-1 win on Sunday. Cogswell was 1-1 with three walks as the first-team all-ACC selection continues to get on base at a nearly .400 clip.
He was drafted in the seventh round of the MLB draft last weekend by the Oakland A's.
UVA will play Tuesday against TCU at 8 p.m. The Horned Frogs beat Siena earlier in the NCAA tournament.
High School:
An unreal high school season for Section II continued this weekend, as three teams captured state championships in baseball and softball.
Hoosic Valley won the baseball championship by beating Pierson/Bridgehampton, 7-2, in the Class C final. The Indians also won the Class C basketball championship in March.
Schalmont used a gutty performance to advance to the Class B state final before beating Rye Neck 3-1 in the championship and Fort Ann captured the Class D softball title with a 9-2 win.
Tri-City ValleyCats
The 'Gatos took two of three from the Connecticut Tigers in the season's opening weekend. Tri-City walked-off the Tigers on Father's Day, getting a game-winning double from Ariel Ovando.
Third-round pick in this years' draft, J.D. Davis, hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
The ValleyCats will open up a two-game set with the Lowell Spinners (Red Sox) tonight at Joe Bruno Stadium.
