Dan Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 in a shocking victory as he passed by the wrecked car of rookie JR Hildebrand on the front stretch of the final lap Sunday.

Listen to what happened in the final turn of the final lap of the race, which gave Wheldon the victory.

Wheldon was trailing the rookie Hildebrand on the final lap of the Indy 500. As Hildebrand exited turn three with victory seemingly in hand, he approached a slower car ahead of him as he was about to enter fourth and final turn on the track.

Instead of backing off and staying behind the slower car to pass on the low side of the track, Hildebrand opted to keep his high speed and pass on the high side of the track.

He then lost control of his car as he got up into the dirt  and slammed the right side of his car into the wall, crippling his car and allowing Wheldon to pass him for the improbable victory.

I caught him in the wrong piece of track. I got up in the marbles and that was it. -Hildebrand

This was Dan Wheldon's second career Indy 500 victory as he won back in 2005. Wheldon came into this race without a full-time ride this season.
