AUDIO: Armen Examines Decision By Jets to Sign Reed

Future Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed is at the end of his playing days and many say he has nothing left in the tank.

Perhaps that is further proven by Reed going through waivers without a team picking him up and then ESPN reporting that no other team was interested in him except New York.

So why would the Jets sign Reed? Two reasons.

#1. Rex knows Reed - Attitude issues don't scare Jets head coach Rex Ryan as he worked with Reed for seven years in Baltimore when he was the defensive line coach and eventual defensive coordinator.

Obviously, Ryan feels a bond with the veteran Reed. If the long-time Raven has anything left in his playing career, perhaps animated Ryan is the one to get it out of him.

#2. Veteran Leadership - The Jets defense is young and in much need of a veteran presence.

"The one kid I think that has a chance to be really good, that’s Antonio Allen," said Rex Ryan, on Thursday. "I don’t think there’s any doubt. You put him out there with an excellent veteran player like (Dawan) Landry, I think has been great for him as a mentor."

Allen has been the most physical and impactful safety on the Jets this year. Who could have even more of a leadership presence than Landry? Reed.

Get a positive Reed to put energy into Allen and you're grooming a franchise safety.
