"I just thought, you work hard on the field and do what you have to do on and off the field, and that's how you're supposed to get rewarded," Wilkerson told a group of reporters at a hometown charity event, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

In an off-season where new General Manager Mike Maccagnan has constructed one of the busiest free agency signing onslaughts in the league, he has yet to address Wilkerson's contract, who will make $6.97 million in the fifth year option of his current deal.

"It's a business; I guess it takes a long time," said Wilkerson. "This is new to me. But, hopefully, something will get done soon."

Wilkerson seems optimistic but the feeling around the team is that the process is still going very slow and currently the two sides are not close to finalizing a deal.

While the 25-year old said he would decide by Monday whether he would be attending the first of Jets mandatory minicamp this week, most believe that he will be there.
