Phil Hughes was a dominate force on the mound for the New York Yankees last night.  he went over 7 innings and allowed just 2 hits from the Twins. He would walk a few, but otherwise it was a terrific outing for the young pitcher.  It helped that Russell Martin knocked two out of the park in the 8-1 win over The Twins.

Martin would homer in the 3rd and the 6th innings, giving him 3 RBI's on the night.  Other Yankee's were producing at the plate as well.  Mark Teixeira was 2-4 with 3 RBI's as well.  Curtis Granderson would add an RBI to that total was well, he was 2-3 at the plate.  They got to Twins Pitcher Kevin Slowey early, taking him for 9 hits and 6 earned runs in 5 innings.

Minnesota continues to struggle in the AL central, they are now 12 games back of the division leading Tigers.  The Yankees remain in first place, but barely.  They are holding onto a half game lead over Boston who also won last night.  They need a solid outing from AJ Burnett tonight in order to keep that half game over the Sox, but Burnett has not been very good in August so far.
