Each week New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officers are called upon to perform rescue and recovery missions along the thousands of miles of hiking trails through out the state. Rangers encounter broken bones, twisted ankles and, in this case, nausea as the reason for rescue.

Rangers were able to hike into the woods and locate the man, a 77-year-old from Farmingdale, in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest in Windham. The man was experiencing nausea and weakness.

Rangers were able to offer some food and drink to build up some strength in the individual and eventually the subject was able to continue. A mission that began at 8:30pm ended and 2:30am. 6 hours in the woods at night could be a scary situation at any age. You don't have  to be elderly to need help.

The very next day, Sunday April 3rd, a 34-year-old from Scotia injured her shoulder while hiking Big Slide Mountain in Keene. Once Rangers arrived on the scene they splinted her shoulder, and helped her to the trailhead.

If a person needs a Forest Ranger, whether it's for a search and rescue, to report a wildfire, or to report illegal activity on state lands and easements, they should call 833-NYS-RANGERS. If a person needs urgent assistance, they can call 911.
