There's something very odd about one popular vacation destination and New York residents will be shocked to learn about it.

Candlewood Lake is a beautiful lake in Connecticut and it's a popular spot to visit for a lot of people in Connecticut and for people in New York since it's pretty close. It's quick and easy to get to from most places, the water is beautiful and it can feel like you're on a mini getaway somewhere else when you are there.

I've been going on Candlewood Lake for years now and I remember one day someone told me there was a "legend" behind the lake and how there's a pretty crazy story behind it that not many people know.

I'm not going to lie, at first, I just thought it was the White Claws talking, but when I did a little digging I found out there is a pretty eerie story behind the lake.

How did Candlewood Lake in Connecticut form?

Officials from Connecticut History say on July 15th, 1926 the Connecticut Light & Power Company's board of directors approved a big plan to to build a man-made reservoir to help produce more electrical power.

This was a very big deal at the time and many people were surprised by this. Can you guess the man-made reservoir they were talking about and where it is today?

Yep, Candlewood Lake.

Officials say it took Connecticut Light & Power 26 months to complete the construction of what would become Connecticut's largest lake. This included building a dam and all the flooding they had to do to complete the project. Notice I used the word "flooding" and this is where all of the eerie vibes with the lake really started.

What's the eerie story behind the flooding that happened in Candlewood Lake in Connecticut?

According to officials, there were 35 families who owned property that was going to be flooded to create the lake. Connecticut Light & Power held the right of eminent domain to help get the lake (private property can be used for public use). Most families sold their property, but a few people held out and refused to do this and some of the lakebed property is still privately owned.

All of the people, families, homes, churches barns, and gravestones (YES GRAVESTONES) were all moved for this project to be completed. This is the stuff that nightmares are made of.... gravestones and remains were exhumed for reburial.

Why has someone not made a horror movie about this? Also, I try not to think about all of this when I'm swimming in Candlewood Lake on a stunning summer day...

When I was pulled aside, the person mentioned that since gravestones had been moved to really create the lake this has allegedly caused the lake to be "haunted" and it puts some pretty bad energy around the lake.

You can't help but wonder about this because there's always at least one drowning there per summer and many locals believe this has to do with the eerie start the lake had.

No matter what you believe about the place being haunted or not you can't deny this is a pretty crazy story.

We hope there's just peace and good energy going forward as the summer continues and people can enjoy the beautiful water and views Candlewood Lake has to offer.
