New York Woman Files Lawsuit Against The Girl Scouts of America

The proposed class action lawsuit was filed Monday night, March 10th by New York resident Amy Mayo at the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York. Plaintiffs are seeking at least five million dollars in damages for anyone in New York State who bought the cookies, according to WRGB.

The suit claims that the alleged presence of dangerous toxins violates New York's consumer protection laws.

Girl Scout Cookies Test Positive

Moms Across America, a consumer group reportedly tested 25 different samples of Girl Scout cookies from three states. The test results showed that 100% tested positive for the pesticide glyphosate, 100% tested positive for heavy metals, and 76% tested positive for cadmium that exceed the EPA limit in water.

This isn't the first time allegations similar to this lawsuit have been made against the Girls Scouts of America. Back in February they responded to similar claims saying that, "Girl Scout Cookies are made with ingredients that adhere to food safety standards set by the FDA and other relevant authorities."

They explained in detail that nearly all foods using plant-based ingredients, including organic foods, may contain trace amounts of heavy metals, and that does not mean they are harmful to consume. Small amounts of heavy metals are oftentimes found naturally in the environment, including in food products, due to air, water, and soil exposure, according to a Girls Scout Blog post.

They post stressed that "metals are not added to any Girl Scout Cookies."

They went on to say that glyphosate is widely used in agriculture and is found nearly everywhere in the food chain. Trace amounts of glyphosate can be found in fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals, baked goods, and other food and beverage commodities.

The post stated,

"The health and safety of Girl Scouts and cookie customers is our top priority. Rest assured: Girl Scout Cookies are safe to consume."
