“High Alert” New York Worried About Iran Retaliation?
On Saturday June 21, 2025 we all learned that the United States had carried out air strikes on several nuclear sites in Iran. These strikes came a week after Israel had also launched attacks on Iran, and Iran had fired back on Israel. It was unclear if the United States would be getting involved until President Trump addressed the American people late Saturday evening.
Thankfully it looks like Iran and Israel have reached a ceasefire, but the rest of the world remains on the edge of their seats to see what will be coming next. In the days that followed those attacks American military bases overseas and at home were put on high alert. Several US cities were also put on high alert, including New York City. Does that alert apply else where in the Empire State?
High Alert
The Capital Region, while hours away from New York City, is still in close enough proximity to feel the impact of events happening south of us. It got me curious to know what could happen here if NY was attacked, or if the Capital Region would be impacted.
As a parent of kids its not something I want to think about, but it is something we have to think about. I want to keep my family as safe as possible. A large scale nuclear event training exercise was just held in the Capital Region not too long ago, so it really makes you think how much we know about current events. Did they know this was going to happen OR do they fear retaliation?
Nuclear Attack in New York
The impact of an attack on New York City would be felt here in the Capital Region on several levels. The first level would be that we'd be cut off from the largest city in the country and that would happen for decades. Many of us have friends and family there and we'd have to deal with that loss.
We also have to think about the environmental effects. Think about what we saw in Chernobyl and the acid rain and nuclear ash that fell for miles and miles after the event happened. Those ashes would almost certainly make their way to us.

As far as a direct attack goes, I don't think that would happen in the Capital Region unless there was a target there. I always worry about the Watervliet Arsenal being a possible target during one of these situations. But over all I think the United States has such a secure perimeter that an attack wouldn't be carried out in that manner.
